It is a discipline that studies the interrelationships and interactions between magnetic properties, magnetic fields, and biological characteristics. “Magnetic field treatment of seeds can produce magnetically induced growth and genetic effects, increase seed germination, promote root growth, and increase water and fertilizer capacity.”( KOPANEV V I,1979) For example, treatment with a magnetic field strength of 290g for 60 minutes has the highest promotion rate for corn root length and plant height. This kind of magnetic field Intensity to artificially change the way plants grow has given me a lot of imagination and desire for performance.

If seed is placed in a permanent magnet with a strength of up to 4000 Gauss, it is interesting to find that the seedling roots seem to avoid the influence of the magnetic field, and are biased toward the weaker side of the magnetic field.

Computer circuits and components determine the birth of these wonderful new creatures, not Darwin’s evolution. Therefore, I thought about in the future, how humans can control the growth of plants and change the conventional theory of biological evolution by changing the magnetic field at will. I hope to create such an imaginative and virtual installation through my visual language. First of all, I borrowed the electromagnetism device model, because I wanted to change the magnetic field environment around the plants, the first point I thought of was to learn from Oersted’s electromagnetism experiment to increase the current of the energized wire to increase the magnetic field strength. So it can be seen that in my device, the rhizome of the flower shape will be entangled by wires and magnets. The function is to transmit current and generate a magnetic field to affect the plant. In an environment where the magnetic field is not particularly strong, the magnetic field will only accelerate the growth of plants, but will not have a particularly large impact on the deformation, so my device demonstrates the future technology of combining electromagnetics and plants. However, I also learned that when in a strong magnetic field, the growth of plants will be distorted, so I created this 3D magnetic flower model. At the beginning, it knew about an ordinary seedling, but in order to accelerate its growth, I added circular magnets in it, and I continued to strengthen its magnetic field size, I added a power cord for it. At the same time, I created this magnetic flower-producing device through scientific research and my imagination of the future.

However, with the infinite increase of the magnetic field, under the strong magnetic field environment, the growth of plants will undergo genetic mutation or death. The supernatural garden Mat Collishaw, Collishaw borrowed some of these characters to perform in the three-dimensional Zoetrope. When the machine rotates, an animated scene that is both vivid and annoying appears. Under the gorgeous and charming appearance, black fairy tales of conquered, controlled and chaotic bred. This gave me a lot of inspiration. I also wanted to create a more surreal garden. In the garden I created, plants did not grow toward the sun, but grew under the influence of a magnetic field. Based on the investigation of the weak magnetic field into a strong magnetic field, plants will have genetic mutations. This is a seemingly prosperous and beautiful new world. I use graphic design to try to find a new connection with the landscape and transform it into a “humanized” environment.



Collishaw borrowed some of these characters to perform in a three-dimensional Zoetrope, an updated version of a Nineteenth Century animation device. As the machine rotates, an animated scene appears that is both compelling and unsavoury.
